About Clean Up the World (CUW) Campaign
Clean Up the World is a community based environmental campaign that inspires and empowers individuals and communities from every corner of the globe to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment.
Fourteen years ago a solo-yachtsman and builder had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard – Sydney Harbour.
In 1987, Ian Kierman AO competed in the BOC Challenge solo yacht race and as he sailed around the world he was shocked the pollution he continually encountered in areas such as the Sargasso Sea in the Caribbean. Having waited years to see the Sargasso’s legendary long golden weeds, Ian’s anticipation turned to anger and disappointment when he found them polluted and tangled with rubbish.
Once back in Sydney, Ian enlisted the help of friends and held Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day 1989 which motivated 40,000 volunteers to remove rusted car bodies, plastic of all kinds, glass bottles and cigarette butts from the harbour.
Ian and his committee believed that if a city could be mobilized to take action, then so could the whole nation. Almost 300,000 volunteers turned out on the first Clean Up Australia Day in 1990 and that involvement has steadily increased over the last 14 years.
The next step for Ian was to take the concept of Clean Up Australia Day to the rest of the world. After gaining the support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Clean Up the World was launched in 1993. The uptake of Clean up the World globally (an estimated 40 million people in over 100 countries now participate each year) has demonstrated that this simple Australian idea has universal appeal and the health of the environment is of concern to people worldwide.
Clean Up the World empowers communities to act for the environment by sharing knowledge, and providing support and resources.
Objectives of CUW campaign
| • |
To bring together citizens from every corner of the globe in simple activities that will positively assist their local environments.
|
| • |
To Share with all nations and cultures the information and practical experience Clean Up Australia and other environmental organizations have developed.
|
| • |
To create an international media focus for Clean Up activities, thereby raising the awareness of governments, industries and communities about local environmental issues, particularly waste minimization, recycling and waste management. |
Royal Marine Conservation Society & CUW
In 1993, the founders of The Royal Marine Conservation Society {JREDS} decided to be part of this campaign far before registering the Society. Diving in the Gulf of Aqaba and seeing the dazzling underwater world made them concerned about it. Seeing the underwater garbage and pollution they decided to do something and try to prevent the gulf from more damage. So, they organized that year the weekend of the campaign {last weekend from the month of September} a clean up dive in Aqaba and since then we became a part of this inspiring campaign.
Through out the years JREDS organized many different kinds of activities: workshops, competitions, beach & city clean ups. We managed to involve people from all over the country in our activates: Kids, Locals, Tourists, Local Authorities, Volunteers and many others.
The “free Aqaba plastic bags” campaign was introduced through CUW 2001, which had a major impact in the area. We launched various Awareness Programs to prevent more damage. The concentration through all the years was to change the attitude of the community and raise their awareness.
Since then The Royal Marine Conservation Society became the focal point and organizer for the campaign in Aqaba.
