The environmental public awareness program is the backbone of JREDS's programs and the very reason for our existence as an organization. JREDS works to raise the awareness of the local community and tourists about the importance of the marine ecosystem. Our goal is to achieve a lasting positive change in behavior through involvement in the international campaign known as Clean up the World, our printed materials, school educational programs, workshops, lectures and Plastic Free Gulf of Aqaba project.

Clean Up the World Campaign
Clean Up the World is an effective international environmental campaign, with Clean Up events taking place annually on the third weekend of September. More than 140 countries take part in the campaign on an annual basis. Clean Up events have motivated nearly 40 million people each year across the globe to make their environment a cleaner, healthier place to live. Clean Up activities range from rubbish collection to educational campaigns, environmental concerts, creative competitions and exhibitions, tree planting projects to the establishment of recycling centers and waste-minimization projects.

Awareness in the Old Town of Aqaba
JREDS is working with the Red Crescent Society to reduce the adverse impact of human activities on the general and marine environment by instilling a sense of guardianship in the local public. JREDS provides capacity-building workshops; a public awareness program concerned with the marine environment, and printed materials.

Publications & Printed Materials
To raise awareness and reach the mass population of Jordan and the region, JREDS emphasizes the need for printed materials such as a yearly calendar with underwater photos and appropriate environmental messages, in addition to brochures in multiple languages to educate the public. JREDS has designed and printed the first manual of marine environment conservation to be taught to children and youth.

School Lectures and Workshops
JREDS has a regular program of intervention to conduct lectures, workshops and seminars for the public targeting youth, women and tourists. These lectures are conducted in a participatory approach using real-life examples. We emphasize an environmental message through those lectures and workshops where people learn about important issues such as endangered species, corals and the under-water world in general.
