The geo-tourism program concentrates on the concept of sustainability as it relates to cultural heritage tourism. Sustainable tourism generally refers to the impact of mass-market tourism on the ecological environment. Geo-tourism goes a step further to encompass the preservation of a destination's culture, heritage, aesthetics and environment, as well as the vitality of the community's lifestyle and economy.
Capacity Building of the Glass Boat Sector in Aqaba
The project is coordinated by JREDS and funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) small grants program. The project aims at upgrading the capacity of the glass boats. It also focuses on regulating and organizing the glass boat sector in Aqaba. Moreover, the general goal is to improve the income generated by the individual glass boat, which in return is an incentive for operators to cooperate in adopting environmentally-friendly practices, thereby safeguarding the local marine environment.
Introducing Eco-Diving for the Diving Industry
Diving is becoming a big industry in our region. Unfortunately, divers can cause unintentional harm to the corals. To sustain our underwater environment, we introduced the Eco-Diving concept to Aqaba divers through diving clubs and through our awareness programs. A manual was developed on "How to Become an Eco-diver" and it is taught within the diving courses offered in Amman and Aqaba; it is also available in all dive centers.
Working with Tourism Sector on Environmental Sound Techniques
Flyers, brochures and posters were designed and made especially for the tourism sector targeting local and international tourists in different languages. All of these publications emphasize ways of enjoying the environment without harming it. This project is designed to assist tourists and visitors with their decisions when they travel and visit Aqaba. The project strives to educate visitors about the nature of their recreational impacts as well as techniques to prevent any environmental damage.
