Detecting drinking water pollution levels, collecting soil samples, and measuring air pollution are typical environmental activities a volunteer might be exposed to in any environmental institution in Jordan . But not at JREDS.
The experience a volunteer gets in JREDS is unique, as JREDS is the only organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the marine environment in Jordan . Volunteers at JREDS are exposed to ideas, concepts and programs unique to Aqaba, and its marine ecosystems. JREDS is a dynamic, innovative institution where volunteers gain significant hands-on experience. At JREDS our volunteers work towards preventing the destruction of our rich marine heritage in the Gulf of Aqaba by promoting sustainable management of natural marine resources, raising public awareness, encouraging community participation. and conducting environmental monitoring.
The Gulf of Aqaba is the only marine resource in Jordan , and is home to the world's Northernmost coral reefs and thousand species of fish, many of which can only be found in the Gulf of Aqaba . Unfortuately, this unique ecosystem is under threat of destruction by marine recreational activities, overfishing, tourism development, and increased industrial pollution in the Aqaba area. Over time, these activities will slowly destroy the reef ecosystem. Enforcement of strict regulation of environmentally harmful activities, combined with regular monitoring and increased awreness of the marine ecosystem and its threats can prevent the destruction of this fragile ecosystem.
It is our role, as Jordanians, to preserve our national environmental heritage and prevent the destruction of our unique marine ecosystems. We can accomplish this by raising awareness of these pressing environmental issues, promoting conservation, preventing industrial pollution and damage from marine recreation, and restoring our reefs to their former splendour by cleaning up our reefs and beaches.
At JREDS we work not only to raise awareness on threats to the marine environment, we also seek to reduce economic pressure on our seas by working with marine communities, such as artisanal fishermen and glassboat operators,. JREDS volunteers work on our socio-economic programs with these communities, as well as on our youth engagement programs, which encourage youth participation in marine environment protection. JREDS volunteers also work on elevating public awareness through environmental campaigns and education programs in local schools, raising awareness of the harmful effects of pollution and plastic bags on the sea. JREDS also engages volunteers in conducting environmental monitoring and environmental impact assessments in Aqaba.
JREDS is a dynamic institution where a volunteer will gain significant hands-on experience. If you would like to make a difference and preserve our marine heritage, join us.
We look forward to seeing you!
