Huge stresses of development in Aqaba and fierce competition between transport, tourism and industry sectors to occupy the beach have left the environment of Aqaba fighting a difficult battle against deterioration and pollution.
Increasing Water Efficiency Use
To promote water efficiency usage, JREDS is involved in a project with two broad programmatic areas related to water-demand management. The first broad area looks at immediate actions towards adopting water efficient technologies such as water-saving devices. The second area addresses the next generation and its attitudes towards water consumption.
Introducing Water Efficiency Devices
JREDS coordinates the efforts of introducing water efficiency devices to decrease overall water consumption. Devices were introduced to large water consumers: hotels, schools, and private entities in Aqaba where water use was successfully decreased by 25% in total.
Gray Water Reuse
JREDS is currently researching the reuse of gray water in agriculture and irrigation. The potential site would be a major attraction for birds and could be used for bird watching.
